Breast Cancer Treatment Knowledge Lacking Among Woman With Breast Cancer
A recent study of 1,132 breast cancer patients done at the University of Michigan shows that many women poorly understand the risks and benefits of breast cancer treatment options The author of the study Dr. Sarah Hawley stated that the information may be delivered to the patients but often is not understood. The study found that nearly half of the breast cancer patients did not know whether survival rates and recurrence rates were the same after mastectomy or breast conserving surgery.Dr. Hawley advised doctors to tell the patient the information more than once. Breast cancer patients are advised not to hesitate to ask questions about anything they do not understand about breast cancer treatment options. Patients are also advised to bring a trusted friend or family member to the visit with the surgeon when treatment options are discussed.
